If you’re stuck at your desk all day (as a business owner, I’ve been there), finding time for movement can feel impossible. This often leads to the thought of trying to incorporate it where you can, like while you’re working. When you want to add movement to your work, you’re often introduced to my two favorite things: the walking pad and the desk stepper.
Both make the big promise of keeping you active and bringing more movement into your sedentary lifestyle, but which one is actually better? Which one should you get?
A desk stepper (I love these, especially my Niceday Steppers) is a compact exercise machine that allows you to step in place while working. It’s typically small enough to fit under your desk, letting you get a low-impact workout without leaving your workspace (yay!).
On the other hand, a walking pad (also compact enough to fit under your desk — mostly) is a slimmer version of the treadmill that allows you to walk slowly while working. Unlike traditional treadmills, walking pads are designed to be quiet, compact, and foldable (aka, you can stash it away when you’re not using it).
Both are designed for mostly low-impact exercise and movement and to fit in your office comfortably, but which one is a better fit for you? Let’s look at the details:
The desk stepper is the winner here — while the walking pad is still compact, it’s not nearly as easy to store as a desk stepper. It’s longer, which requires more space to use and requires a bit more set-up when you’re ready for it.
You’re going to get a similar level of noise from both the desk stepper and the walking pad. While they’re designed to be as quiet as possible, the walking pad gives off a background hum (which depends greatly on the brand you buy), and the desk steppers give off a bit of noise thanks to the stepping mechanism.
A walking pad is going to offer a moderate to low-intensity workout, while the desk stepper is strictly low-impact. You can adjust your speed on the walking pad to increase your cardio, helping improve your stamina.
It’s all good to look at both on their own, but you have to consider how it’s going to impact your work. Honestly, it really depends on what you prefer. Some people say that desk steppers are easier to use and maintain focus — others say that walking pads are easier.
I actually love both my desk stepper and my walking pad, so it’s hard for me to pick. Choose what you feel is right for you! A desk stepper is the easiest to start with as a they have a lower price range — but you can also find an affordable walking pad looking locally (as many people tend to buy and not use them).
If you’re looking for a recommendation, I recommend the Niceday Stepper for a desk stepper and this walking pad.
After you grab one, don’t forget to come back here and share your pick (and how you feel about it) in the comments down below!
