Running a business is a rollercoaster of emotions — from the highs of connecting with that dream client to the lows of dealing with unexpected setbacks (or the realization that your vacation may need to be a staycation); your nervous system takes a hit every step of the way.
Nothing is quite as dysregulated to a nervous system as attempting to balance running your own business and having a life outside of said business. That’s why it’s important to listen to your body, learn how to regulate your nervous system, and get your body out of that “fight or flight” mode.
So, if you’re ready to learn a few ways to regulate your nervous system as a business owner, keep reading (I got you):

First things first: You have to learn how to recognize when you’re becoming (or already are) dysregulated.
For example, do you feel like it’s all “too much” right now even though deep down you know you have the skills and ability to do it? Or maybe you’re dealing with anxiety, overwhelm, and a few creeping thoughts of “maybe I should just burn it all down and start fresh?” That’s your nervous system — and it’s sounding the not-so-theoretical alarm.
A dysregulated nervous system can lead to poor decision-making, lack of motivation, insomnia, depression, irritability, headaches, and difficulty concentrating (none of which are ideal when you’re trying to complete client work to finally get some time off).
You don’t need hours (or days) to regulate your nervous system and get back on track — although you should schedule a break soon, or you’ll be stuck in a vicious cycle of regulating your nervous system every time you need to get something done — you just need a few minutes.
Here are some of the best ways to regulate your nervous system as a business owner (when you still have things that need to get done):
Bring your mind back to the present moment with a grounding exercise. And it’s exactly what it sounds like — you lay on the floor to “ground” yourself and calm your nerves. It also works by touching something with texture, like a piece of fabric. This small action helps your brain reconnect with the present and pull you out of that anxious loop.
Breathwork is extremely helpful when you’re trying to calm your nervous system. Take slow, deep breaths to signal to your brain that you’re safe and there’s no need to be in full panic mode.
It might sound silly, but don’t knock it until you try it! When you sing, you engage your vagus nerve, which is key in calming your body. Plus, it’s hard to stay stressed when you’re belting out your favorite songs.
There’s a reason why weighted blankets have become so popular — they work. The gentle pressure they provide helps stimulate the release of serotonin, a feel-good hormone. If you haven’t tried one yet, it might be worth the investment. Psst — if you’re interested, check out my top recommended blanket here.
Movement is a great way to release tension and regulate your nervous system. Take a quick walk around your neighborhood or do a full-blown workout; it’ll help reduce stress and boost your mood!
Regulating your nervous system isn’t a one-time thing; you should practice (and prioritize) regularly. Listen to your body and take action when you start feeling dysregulated. Put more emphasis on getting enough sleep, staying hydrated, and making time for activities that bring you joy and relaxation.
By incorporating these practices into your daily routine, you’ll be better equipped to handle the ups and downs of running a business without struggling to stay motivated, focused, or simply getting things done!
